A Guide to the
UPPER MOKELUMNE RIVER WATERSHED

For Educators in Calaveras and Amador Counties

Dedication:
For the Children of Amador and Calaveras Counties
the present and future stewards of our earth.

"There is not a 'fragment' in all nature, for every relative fragment of one thing is a full harmonious unit in itself." - John Muir

Circles and Cycles, an environmental education Guide to the Upper Mokelumne River Watershed, has been developed by the sponsorship of the Upper Mokelumne River Watershed Authority (East Bay Municipal Utility District, Calaveras County Water District, Calaveras Public Utility District, Amador Water Agency, Jackson Valley Irrigation District, and Alpine Water District) to provide educators with opportunities to expand their classrooms, to connect community resources with the students learning experience, and to bring a sense of awe to the beauty surroundin them in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada; ultimately the students should become loving, well-educated stewards of the land.

The guide, for kindergarten through twelfth grade, is divided into six themes relating to stewardship of the watershed: Interdependency, Sense of Place, Journey of Water, Riparian Habitat, Earth's Many Forces, and California - The Changing State. Each theme can be extended through various field trip opportunities, outreach to community organizations and agencies, and national and state funded programs. Teachers are encouraged to choose from a variety of pre- and post- activities to prepare their students to explore the biomes, such as forests, woodlands, grasslands, wetlands and riparian habitats, and the waste water plant and drinking water treatment plants in the Upper Mokelumne River Watershed to help science come alive. Each biome is defined below:

Forest: An area dominated by large, tall trees growing close together. In contrast to wood-lands, the close proximity of forest trees dramatically reduces the amount of light that reaches the forest floor.

Woodland: An area characterized by an overstory of medium-sized, widely spaced trees and an understory of shrubs and herbaceous plants.

Grassland: An area dominated by grasses, sometimes accompanied by other herbaceous (non-woody) plants or woody shrubs.

Riparian Habitat: Having to do with banks of rivers or streams. Riparian areas contain plant species that are tolerant of periodic flooding. These wetlands include marshes, vernal pools, oases, bogs, ponds, streams, creeks and lakes.

Acknowledgments:
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this first edition of Circles and Cycles, A Guide to the Upper Mokelumne River Watershed. For the past two years this guide was developed with the help of many professionals who have worked to write, field test, edit, and review this unique outdoor education resource.
